So you want to publish your story as a serial online?
So Many Options!
So you’re probably here because you have a story, or an idea for a story, and you want to publish it serially. Online. Likely through a website like Radish, Vella, or Royal Road (to name a few). But there’s a lot of them, they all have their own TOS, guidelines, rules, etc, and you’re not sure which one (or ones) to go with. You’re also likely worried about copyright, ownership, and if a particular site might be a bit shady.
All of that it’s 100% understandable. I personally had those same questions. I’m not an expert, of course. I’m still learning. But I am a librarian and I do like a good research rabbit hole. Especially when most online sources on this don’t have a ton of information. Or it’s all spread out over Reddit and blogs.
This originally wasn’t going to be a blog post for my website. But when I started down this rabbit hole and made a spreadsheet to keep track of everything—I realized other writers embarking down this path may also have the same questions and concerns. And why shouldn’t they also have access to the same information? So this is why this post exists. Keep in mind I might not update the data on the spreadsheet regularly, but I hope to add or remove from it once a year. (We’ll see. Knowing me…? Hmmm….)
You also might want to note that you may not entirely agree with my assessments or opinions in this spreadsheet. That’s ok too. I don’t expect everyone to. This is merely a helpful guide for those wanting to publish on webnovel/serial sites who may wish for a little guidance.
Cheers! I hope you enjoy it.
